It was done very quietly, but Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill turned in a very good year. Throwing for 27 touchdowns and just north of 4,000 yards, Tannehill cemented himself as a solid starter in the NFL with potential to be even better. Miami realized this too, acquiring players like Kenny Stills, Greg Jennings and Jordan Cameron to boost the team’s firepower for him.

However, the biggest acquisition made for Tannehill was the draft selection of DeVante Parker, and the health of his foot is going to dictate how far the Dolphins’ offense will go in 2015.

The Dolphins did a good job of replacing Charles Clay with Cameron, adding a deep threat in Stills, and a good possession receiver in Jennings. All three are capable options that will keep the Dolphins’ offense relevant. That said, there are two issues with that group that need to be noted.

The first is that this is an entirely new group for both Tannehill and this offense. The kind of chemistry that really makes offenses run and improve doesn’t happen overnight. For as good as those players may be, that talent only shows when there’s comfort in the offense and the quarterback. Getting that between four players for the first time will be an ongoing process that won’t sink the Dolphins’ offense, but it won’t blow it up either.

Secondly, while that group is serviceable for the team’s needs, none of them have true superstar potential — except Parkers. He is the most explosive, dynamic, and potentially dominating playmaker Miami has. Jennings, Cameron, Stills, etc. can hold the fort down, but Parker realizing his potential is the X-factor that will really elevate Tannehill and the Dolphins’ attack to the next level. His talent alone can set everything off.

Without Parker, Tannehill’s potential in 2015 is probably right about where it was last year. While that’s all well and good, it’s not the definite statistical boost across the board that a healthy Parker will bring the QB. Miami’s offense probably can’t carry the team if they had to right now, but Parker can elevate the unit to that level if he can get on the field.
