Indianapolis Colts Training Camp Profile: Vontae Davis

The Indianapolis Colts used the 2015 offseason to improve their offensive passing attack and pass rush. However, cornerback and returning starter Vontae Davis could be the most important player in order for the Colts to reach the Super Bowl.

The Colts traded with theMiami Dolphins for Davis in 2012. Since then, Davis has developed into the Colts’ top cornerback. Davis is 27 years old and can guard anyone on either side of the field, though he usually covers the opposing team’s best receiver. He has 42 combined tackles, 18 pass deflections and four interceptions.

The Colts need him. The team has some depth at cornerback with Greg Toler and Darius Butler, but they do not have another guy with Davis’ skill set. Davis is certainly the leader of the group, which includes signed veteran Winston Guy and drafted defensive back D’Joun Smith, and he will need to play the part if the Colts want to win a Super Bowl.

Davis takes a lot of chances at cornerback. He likes to break on receivers’ routes and go for interceptions rather than tackles. Once in a while it can get him into trouble, but for the most part he makes educated guesses.

There is no reason to believe the Colts will change Davis’ role. He is undoubtedly the team’s best cornerback and one of the leaders on the defensive side of the football. He will need to continue his strong play and help motivate other defensive players to raise their level of play.

The offense will get the headlines. However, the team’s improved defense will help them win the Super Bowl. Vontae Davis’ success is imperative for the Colts’ defense. Whether he knows it or not, his ability to take away one side of the field for opposing quarterbacks sets the tone for the entire defense.
