Buffalo Bills Must Part Ways With Aaron Kromer in Wake of Battery Charges

Last night, Aaron Kromer, the offensive line coach of the Buffalo Bills, was arrested in Florida on a misdemeanor battery charge. Kromer was involved with an altercation with his neighbor’s son, and he reportedly threatened to kill the boy’s family if he reported Kromer to the police. This is a big deal. Off-the-field violence has been a major focus of the NFL lately, and it will be important for the league not to overlook Kromer’s case. I personally think that the Bills should take action first, and the team should part ways with Aaron Kromer.

Kromer has had a spotty past at best during his NFL years, and while he hasn’t had off-the-field issues, he has been involved with plenty on the field. In 2012, Kromer served as the interim head coach for the New Orleans Saints after the Bountygate scandal hit the team. While it was never proven that Kromer knew anything about Bountygate, I believe that every member of the Saints coaching staff was at least generally aware of what was going on in the locker room. That is a strike against Kromer.

Last season, Kromer was the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, and he created a wildly uncomfortable situation within their locker room. Kromer was critical of the team’s quarterback Jay Cutler, and he spoke to the media about some concerns that he had with Cutler’s game management abilities. This made many of the Bears players angry because they felt like they couldn’t trust the members of the locker room, and they couldn’t trust Kromer at all when he was revealed to be the source. He killed whatever chemistry was left in the locker room, and that was a major issue for the team down the stretch.

Rex Ryan already has some issues controlling locker rooms, so having a guy like Kromer in there could be detrimental to the team. The players will not be able to trust him, and if times get tough, then Kromer may only make the situation worse. Also, it’s not like Kromer is that important to the team. Granted, he is a great offensive line coach, but at what cost do you keep him? He is likely to cause further problems with the team, so the team needs to decide if it’s worth it to keep him around.

It’s impossible to ignore Kromer’s track record with teams. Now, add in last night’s altercation when he allegedly punched a young boy and threatened to kill his family, and the team has a problem on their hands. The Bills must act as quickly as they can, and I would expect the team to part ways with Kromer before he can cause any more trouble, on or off the field.
