Dallas Cowboys Rumors: RB Chris Johnson Could Be Worthwhile Addition

The Dallas Cowboys lost star running back DeMarco Murray in free agency to their division rival Philadelphia Eagles and could lose a lot of production from their running game. At this point in time they are working with both Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle at the position, but Jerry Jones could decide to make a move to bring in another player to compete for the starting job. There are a few free agents on the market who could make an impact for them.

Jason La Canfora of NFL.com believes that Chris Johnson could end up signing with the Cowboys. It is a move that wouldn’t cost the Cowboys much, but could bring in a dynamic threat behind the Cowboys’ dominant offensive line.

During the 2014 season with the New York Jets, Johnson ended up carrying the football 155 times for 663 yards and a touchdown. They obviously aren’t encouraging numbers, but the Jets don’t have nearly the offensive line that Dallas has and they didn’t have a legitimate passing game to take pressure off of the run either. Johnson still has excellent speed and could be exactly the fit that the Cowboys need.

Neither McFadden nor Randle will put up bigger numbers than Johnson would be capable of recording. McFadden is mostly known for being a walking injury, while Randle is the definition of an unproven player.

At 29 years old, Johnson still has another year or two of good football left in him. He has been used quite a bit throughout his seven-year NFL career, but that certainly doesn’t mean that he is out of gas. There were times where he looked like his former self last year with the Jets, but those moments were few and far between.

Signing Johnson would be the type of move that Jones has been known to make throughout his career running the Cowboys. He is always willing to give players another chance, and those gambles have worked out at times as well. It isn’t likely that the Cowboys would find extremely good production by signing Johnson, but all they need is enough of a boost to help take pressure off of Tony Romo and the Cowboys’ passing game.

Needless to say, this rumor is something to keep an eye on moving forward for the Cowboys and their fans. Johnson hasn’t talked about a deal with the Cowboys yet as far as it’s known, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the two sides engage in a dialogue at some point in the fairly near future.

Whether Johnson would begin the season as the starting running back or not is another question, but bringing in another body at the position wouldn’t be a bad idea. Johnson may not be the superstar that he was back in his days with the Tennessee Titans, but he is more than capable of stepping up and providing a consistent threat on the ground for the Cowboys.
