The Buffalo Bills have a very solid looking roster heading into 2015 training camp. The Bills are looking like a real threat to be a playoff contender, and the team has a lot of great veterans and young players. That said, the team does have a good amount of players who won’t make the roster, and here are five prominent players who are on the roster bubble heading into camp.

Chris Williams was dreadful as a starter for the Bills last season, and it may not make much sense to keep him around. The team could use him as a depth player, but if Cyril Richardson steps up, then the team may no longer need Williams to be a backup interior lineman. They may keep him to have a veteran presence on the offensive line, but it’s more likely that he is on the outside looking in for this team as of now.

4. DE Alex Carrington

Carrington was a decent backup for the Bills before he went to the St. Louis Rams last season. However, the team doesn’t really need him anymore. They have solid depth behind Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes in Manny Lawson and Michael Buchanan, and Jarius Wynn is a similar player to Carrington. He may have trouble beating out those players, and at best he is a long shot to make the team’s roster.

3. TE Matthew Mulligan

The Bills have Charles Clay, rookie Nick O’Leary and speedy receiving threat Chris Gragg at the tight end position. Can they really afford to have a blocking tight end on the roster? I think the answer to that is no. The team can use O’Leary as a solid blocker, or possibly H-back MarQueis Gray, and Mulligan won’t be able to make the team. The journeyman will have to continue to search for a home in the NFL.

2. RB Fred Jackson

LeSean McCoy is going to be the lead back for the Bills, but the backup position is still unresolved. As great as Fred Jackson has been during his Bills career, he is a long shot to win the starting job. I expect Bryce Brown and rookie Karlos Williams to battle it out for the primary backup job. Jackson will give everything he’s got, but it won’t be enough. The 34-year-old will be hard-pressed to make the roster and he may have to retire.

1. QB Matt Cassel

I did think that Matt Cassel was going to be the starting quarterback for the team this season. Now, it looks like he is a long shot to make the roster. Cassel has been outplayed by Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel during OTAs. If he doesn’t win the starting job, he will be off the team. Cassel will get a job as a backup somewhere, but it won’t be in Buffalo. Taylor will probably win the starting job, and Cassel will be looking for work.
