This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers are likely to move on from quarterback Colin Kaepernick after what turned out to be a disastrous 2015 campaign for the young gunslinger. One of the teams rumored to have interest in him if he released or traded is the Oakland Raiders, which may come as a surprise to some.

Now obviously the Raiders would only add Kaepernick to the roster as a backup, but it’s an intriguing idea nonetheless. Derek Carr has cemented himself as the franchise quarterback this season, showing immense improvement from his rookie season and turning the Oakland offense into one worth worrying about. However, the backup quarterback situation is far from stable.

At this moment, the Raiders’ best option behind Carr is Matt McGloin, who is an experienced but ordinary NFL quarterback. Although he’s not exactly someone who’s going to ruin a game, he certainly isn’t a difference maker either. That’s why adding a No. 2 option such as Kaepernick makes some sense.

Now one specific piece would have to fall into place for this to happen. That being that no other teams to be interested in signing/acquiring him as a potential starter, which seems unlikely. If a starting role didn’t present itself, though, the Raiders and Kaepernick may be a perfect match.

Some folks within the Oakland organization were very high on Kaepernick leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft, and owner Mark Davis allegedly wanted to draft him before the 49ers traded up. If he was available and willing to come on as the No. 2, it’s safe to assume at least a couple of members of the front office would still be interested in bringing him aboard.

A lot can happen between now and then, but don’t be surprised to see the Raiders in the mix for Kaepernick.
