Raiders, Chargers, Rams File For Relocation To Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Raiders and Los Angeles Rams fled the ‘City of Angels’ after the 1994 NFL season, as each franchise was fed up with their stadium situation and a resolution did not appear to be on the horizon.

Thus, the United States’ second-largest city and market has been without an NFL team for the past 21 years. Many teams have been rumored to be relocating since and endless stadium proposals have been drawn up, but nothing has ever come to fruition.

Today marks one step closer to the return of football to Los Angeles, as the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams, who have all been centrally located in the city at one point of their respective franchise’s history, have filed for relocation to the city.

In all likelihood, two of the three teams will be accepted, and starting next season will have to play either in a college stadium, at the Rose Bowl, or at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum until a new stadium is erected.

If you ask me, it makes the most sense for the Raiders and Rams to be the chosen ones. The Raiders still have an immense fanbase in Los Angeles and would likely do the best from a financial standpoint. The Rams might always play second-fiddle in the town, but since they were in the area just two decades ago, they still have a solid amount of fans there as well.

The Chargers just aren’t well received in Los Angeles, especially since they’ve been the Raiders’ bitter rival in the AFC West for quite some time.

The league released the following statement on Monday night:

“Three teams – the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, and San Diego Chargers – each submitted applications to our office today to relocate their franchises to the Los Angeles area beginning with the 2016 season. Each team submitted the appropriate documentation in support of its application as required by the NFL Policy and Procedures for Proposed Franchise Relocations.

“The applications will be reviewed this week by league staff and three league committees that will meet in New York on Wednesday and Thursday — the Los Angeles Opportunities, Stadium, and Finance committees. The applications will be presented for consideration at next week’s league meeting in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday. The relocation of a franchise requires the affirmative vote of three-quarters of the NFL clubs (24 of 32).”

Stay tuned, folks. As with everything that happens in the NFL, there’s plenty of drama in the forecast regarding this situation.
