Philadelphia Eagles Should Set Expectations High For Doug Pederson

Usually, press conferences to introduce new NFL head coaches are pretty routine things. The owners say that they get the guy they wanted all along, the new coach says this is a great opportunity, and there might be some talk of offensive and defensive philosophy.

Everybody goes home with the sound bites and the quotes they want, stories are written, and not much in the way of substance is really learned.

There is, though, some real drama in the Philadelphia Eagles’ press conference to announce Doug Pederson as the head coach on Tuesday morning. The Eagles, specifically owner Jeffrey Lurie, can go one of two ways. Lurie can urge patience or he can set the bar high. With this hire he has only one choice, and that has to be to win now because of the circumstances. If Pederson really is the top choice, he should be able to win immediately without a whole lot of patience being preached by Lurie. If not, a lot of preconceived notions will be fulfilled.

In many circles, Pederson is seen as the third-best choice after former Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator Adam Gase interviewed with the Eagles twice and took the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job and then they focused on ex-New York Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin. When the Giants hired Ben McAdoo, any chance of Coughlin putting together a capable staff went out the window, so the Eagles asked Coughlin to withdraw his name out of courtesy.

That’s why the Eagles should define the immediate expectations for him and those should be immediately winning the NFC East title. If Pederson really is as good as Lurie will say he is, he should be a guy who is capable of taking the Eagles as presently constituted from a losing team to a winning one.
