Vernon Hargreaves III Should Be New Orleans Saints' No. 1 Draft Target Following 2016 NFL Combine

By Brendan Patel

The New Orleans Saints were one of the worst teams in the league against the pass last season. Their secondary was often times outmatched, and it did not help that quarterbacks had plenty of time to throw against them. They have been known as an offensive powerhouse for a while, but Drew Brees is getting older and the team must put more of an emphasis on defense.

There are several areas on defense that the team must improve, but cornerback is arguably their biggest need. It remains to be seen who will be available with their first-round pick, and they may have to go after a defensive lineman if the top defensive backs are off the board. One player that they have to keep an eye on is Vernon Hargreaves III, who may be the best pure cornerback in the draft.

Hargreaves III might not have the ideal height that coaches are often looking for, but he plays a lot bigger than his size. He is extremely tough and competitive, and is capable of providing run support and taking on bigger players. He is very quick and can accelerate out of his breaks, but also possesses long-range speed to keep up with receivers down the field. His aggressive nature allows him to make plays on the ball, and he has the potential to be a lockdown corner in the future.

The Saints need to improve their defense, and they would be extremely lucky if Hargreaves III were to fall to them. He is the type of playmaker that they need in their secondary, and can be a star in the league. The Saints will need to prove that they can defend the pass if they want to get back to the playoffs.
