Alex Boone Signing An Absolute Steal For Minnesota Vikings

By Jacob Camenker

The Minnesota Vikings have added another piece to their solid young team. At the end of last season, it was apparent that the Vikings needed some help along the offensive line, as Teddy Bridgewater took a beating towards the end of last season. The team addressed their issue on Wednesday by adding Alex Boone to the mix, and they got an absolute steal.

Boone has been a terrific guard the past four seasons for the San Francisco 49ers and he has been steady in both run blocking and pass protection. The six year veteran is extremely versatile and can play almost anywhere on the line. He was a big part of the team’s success during their postseason runs, and he was one of the lone bright spots on their poor offense last season.

Meanwhile, the Vikings’ offensive line was in a precarious situation heading into the offseason. One of their top guards, Mike Harris, was a free agent. Center John Sullivan is getting older. Tackles Matt Kalil and Phil Loadholt have struggled with injuries and were rumored to be possible cap casualties. The team really needed to ensure that they added help in either the draft or in free agency. They did just that by adding Boone (and re-signing Harris) and now the interior of their line is set for the next few years.

Of course, the team did also get a pretty good deal on the Boone contract. Boone is going to be making just under $7 million per season, which ranks sixth amongst guard contracts. Essentially, his salary is comparable to that of Josh Sitton, who is one of the better guards in the league. I think it is safe to put Boone and Sitton in similar tiers, so them getting paid a similar amount makes sense.

Boone is going to be a major upgrade for the Vikings and the team will be happy to have him around. He is going to help protect Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson and at such a low price tag, it is safe to say that the Vikings got a great deal.
