Philadelphia Eagles Have Elite Offensive Line After Signing Stefen Wisniewski

By Jacob Camenker

The Philadelphia Eagles have added yet another quality player late in the free agent period, and it may end up being one of the best signings of the offseason. The team agreed to terms on a one-year deal with center/guard Stefen Wisniewski who played last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Wisniewski is one of the best interior linemen in the league and getting him on a one-year deal is an absolute steal for the Eagles.

Wisniewski was a second-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in the 2011 NFL Draft. He played extremely well as a Raider, excelling in terms of run blocking and holding up very well against the pass. He was one of the best and most durable linemen in the league, having missed just three games during his four-year tenure.

However, the Raiders elected to go a different path during 2015 free agency when they signed Rodney Hudson away from the Kansas City Chiefs. As a result, Wisniewski remained on the market until he inked a one-year deal with the Jaguars. With the Jags, Wisniewski again started every one of their 16 games and he was generally terrific. His great pass protection was a major reason for the Jaguars’ offensive improvements.

Now, Wisniewski is going to find himself on his third team in as many years, but he should continue to play at a high level. With the Eagles, he projects to be a starter at guard, replacing the decent Matt Tobin and complementing fellow interior linemen Brandon Brooks and Jason Kelce. His presence will make the Eagles’ offensive line elite heading into 2016, as they have excellent depth and a couple of bookends at tackle (Jason Peters and Lane Johnson) to go along with the solid interior players.

Essentially, the Eagles have bought low on another solid player who will immensely help their offense in 2016. The team will likely be able to run the ball very well, especially if they end up spending their first-round pick on Ezekiel Elliot. Adding Wisniewski is a terrific buy-low move and it will pay dividends for the team.
