New York Jets Should Only Select QB In 2016 NFL Draft If They Aren't Re-Signing Ryan Fitzpatrick

By Jason Fletcher

The New York Jets went 10-6 in Todd Bowles‘ first season in 2015, but there’s been a lot of speculation that the team is considering taking a quarterback with pick No. 20 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. The only way this move makes any sense is if the Jets are ready to let Ryan Fitzpatrick walk.

The biggest rumor is that the Jets would consider taking Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch with their first-round pick, but it’s starting to sound like Lynch may be targeted by the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 7 pick or the Cleveland Browns with the No. 8 pick.

If the Jets were to end up selecting Lynch, they have to be ready to move on from Fitzpatrick. He’s looking for more than a one or two-year deal with some solid money attached to it. That would likely mean Lynch sits on the bench for a couple of years and wastes most of his rookie contract backing up Fitzpatrick.

While Lynch definitely needs to sit for at least one year, it wouldn’t make sense to give Fitzpatrick the deal he’s looking for if Lynch is going to be ready to go in 2017. It would make more sense to sign someone like Brian Hoyer for one year and then let Lynch take over after that.

If the Jets plan on keeping Fitzpatrick, it would make sense to let Bryce Petty sit and learn for another couple of years and then give him a chance to take over after Fitzpatrick. The team drafted Petty in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, and it would be a colossal waste to not at least give him a shot at some point.
