Brooks Laich Says The Washington Capitals Will Make Playoffs

By Matt Geiser

Washington Capitals second-line center Brooks Laich does a weekly radio segment with The Junkies on 106.7 The Fan every Wednesday. Today however, Laich might have bit off more than he could chew. Laich was asked if the Capitals were to miss the playoffs, which games and moments from this season would he look back on with regret.

Laich wouldn’t even think about entertaining the thought of the Capitals missing the postseason for the first time since the 2006-2007 season, going as far as saying “the Capitals will make the playoffs.” (Read Laich’s entire statement over on the D.C. Sports Bog.) Of course, reporters hounded Laich after this mornings practice at the KCI about his comments. Laich didn’t back down from his statement.

“I have a belief we’re going to be in the playoffs and that’s it. I don’t want to discuss any scenario that we’re not. My belief is that we’re going to be in the playoffs.” – Brooks Laich

Some Buffalo Sabres players were asked about Laich’s comments and responded how one would expect them to. Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller was quoted saying, “We’re not playing against him and I don’t think he’s Mark Messier.” Miller was referencing when Messier guaranteed a game 7 win by the Rangers in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. Miller believes Laich is just “looking for a spark” to get the Capitals going in the last two games.

Laich understands what’s on the line as the Capitals prepare for their final two games against the Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Don’t mistake that reality for any conviction in Laich’s message. As fans of both teams alike, we will just have to wait until judgement day on Saturday to see who is in or out.
