Toronto Maple Leafs: Being at the Bottom of the NHL Standings is Essential

By Jeff Zeffer

Even with a disappointing finish of the 2011/12 NHL season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, I believe is was essential for the Maple Leafs to finish near the bottom of the NHL standings, get a lottery pick, so that they can compete in a fast pace NHL.

Looking back at the Stanley Cup winners since the lock-out of the 2004/05 season, in my opinion all of those Cup winners expect for the Detroit Red Wings, I believe these teams won the cup with the youthfulness in their team.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a young team, but why it is essential for Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs to continue to get high picks is we need the opportunity to draft potential budding stars. Though drafting Luke Schenn (5th overall) and Nazem Kadri (7th overall), has not turned out the way Maple Leafs had hope for with these specific two players. In addition to draft around the 14th spot, this team has not done well at all. But more opportunities means more chances to get better players through the draft and by looking at recent top draft choices since the NHL lock-out, being in the top 5 is where struggling teams need to be at the end of the season and not just missing the playoffs.

More specifically Brian Burke truly needs to trade up for the #1 overall pick in this year’s NHL draft, which is current held by the Edmonton Oilers. Not because it will help the Maple Leafs in the long run, but selecting 1st overall in the draft will erase the feeling of one of the most disappointing seasons in Maple Leafs history.
