New York Rangers Fans Should Stop Living In The Past
Now, while I am a Rangers fan and I love and appreciate what happened in ’94, it’s actually pretty sad to keep thinking and celebrating something that occurred 20 years ago as if it were yesterday. We all know the outcome of that game as the Rangers won 3-2 and captured their first Stanley Cup victory since 1940, something that was a long time coming.
Flash forward to the present: this upcoming season is the 20-year anniversary of that historic 1993-94 season, yet I know a lot of Rangers fans who still act like ’94 was yesterday.
It was 20 years ago, and it is time to move on. Not only do I feel alot of the fans still celebrate ’94 as it were yesterday, but I also believe the Rangers franchise feels the same way to some extent. I mean, it was a well-deserved Stanley Cup victory no doubt, but how long does it take to continuously celebrate it before it looks sad and pathetic?
Football fans rip on New York Jets fans all of the time because they still reminisce about the 1969 Superbowl and talk about Joe Namath‘s guarantee as if it happened just a few years back. The Chicago Blackhawks could have pulled a Rangers and celebrated their 2010 cup for decades, because it was their first Stanley Cup victory since 1961, but they didn’t.
Instead, they moved on right away and captured another cup three years later, which now puts the Rangers in dead last in Stanley Cups out of all of the Original Six teams. Sadly, there is no simple coincidence as to why the Rangers have the least amount of Stanley Cups out of all of the Original Six teams. I believe it is because the team loves to live in the past.
In this upcoming 2013-14 season, the Rangers are almost halfway towards another 54 years without winning it all, and if they do not make a serious push to capture Lord Stanley’s Cup this season or in these next couple of years, we will have another 54-year drought on our hands, and possibly even more.
