The Buffalo Sabres entered this season poised to tank and find a potential franchise cornerstone in the 2015 NHL Draft. The early days of the season looked like that plan was working before the team got on a hot streak and climbed within shouting distance of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. A big reason for this has been the maturation of young players, most notably center Zemgus Girgensons, who has come on very strong as of late.

The 20-year-old Latvian is second on the team in scoring, leading the team in plus/minus and has taken on an integral role defensively. This type of multi-faceted approach has Girgensons turning heads and the Sabres climbing in the standings. In addition to the scoring, Girgensons makes the team tough to play against and is the type of big-bodied center contending teams covet.

What I find most intriguing about Girgensons’ play and the Sabres’ run of success is that it has been rewarded with Girgensons leading the entire league in All-Star voting. The nation of Latvia and the city of Buffalo have pushed their young star and will likely see him skating in the festivities in Columbus next month representing both parties proudly.

While a fan voted All-Star appearance would be a great reward, the team‘s success has been even better which is why Girgensons is the team’s MVP in the early goings of the season. What’s scary for opponents of the Sabres is he’s only 20 years old and is just scratching the surface. The ultra-competitive, physical center will be scoring and doling out hits in Buffalo for years to come as brighter days lay ahead for the long-suffering fanbase.
