The Buffalo Sabres have struggled in recent seasons, but they had several long runs into the playoffs throughout their history and many big name players. Here are the top-five captains in team history.

Folingo was a steady point producer for Buffalo. He recorded 247 career goals and 264 assists in only 10 seasons. He also had a huge 80-point, 41-goal season in 1985. He earned the C on his jersey in Buffalo.

4. Chris Drury (November 2003, March 2004, 2005-07)

Drury is the only three-time captain of the Sabres. He was a warrior for this team and many viewed his departure - along with Daniel Briere - as the beginning of the team’s long-term playoff drought. Regardless, Drury was a true captain during his tenure with Buffalo.

3. Danny Gare (1977-82)

Gare, no picture available, had two 85-point seasons and was elected to two All-Star games during his time with the Sabres. The right winger even held a share of the NHL scoring title in 1979 with 56 goals. Gare stays active in the Western New York area, and even calls a game now and then.

2. Pat LaFontaine (1992-97)

La, La, La, La, LaFontaine. He may not have the top spot, but he was a fan-favorite for over five years in WNY. He even set team recorded for points (148) and assists (95) in a single season. LaFontaine will forever live in Buffalo sports infamy and will go down as one of the best captains in team history.

1. Gilbert Perreault (1982-87)

Perreault was the star of the French Connection that included Rene Robert and Rick Martin. The Forgotten Frenchman was elected to nine All-Star games and inducted into the Hall of Fame back in 1990. He leads the franchise in games played (1,191), points (1,326), goals (512) and assists (814). He is easily the best captain in Buffalo history.
