5 Players the Colorado Avalanche Should Trade Right Now

By Derek Kortepeter

The Colorado Avalanche have had a rough go of it this season. While trading players is only one facet of fixing a team’s win percentage, it is still worth discussing. Here are five players who should be considered for exchange to another team.

5. Dennis Everberg

The physical forward has played 12 games for the Avalanche and has not managed to put up a single point. He is currently a minus-four and has only taken eight shots on goal. Before he reached the NHL, Everberg was known to score even though he is also known as a hitter. It may be time to try trading him to another team.

4. Jack Skille

Skille is a winger with a reputation for being strong on the forecheck and an agile skater. The problem is he also has a reputation for cold streaks and this season is no different. In the 19 games he has played have only produced three points, not to mention his current plus/minus of minus-one. His poor consistency is a known problem, and it appears that won't change soon enough for the Avs.

3. Nate Guenin

The Colorado defensive unit as a whole struggles, but Guenin seems to struggle more. His ice awareness has not been where it should be and that is concerning. Additionally, the defenseman cannot handle a puck to save his life. Most Avs fans wondered why Guenin was signed in the first place. It may be time to send him packing somewhere else.

2. Jarome Iginla

Unlike other players on this list, Jarome Iginla should be traded because he is a fantastic player. To elaborate further, there is a lot of talk about trading Matt Duchene because he has high value (which means great players in return). Instead, why not trade Iginla? He is an excellent player but does not have as many years logically left as an NHL player due to his age. Teams will still gladly trade for Iginla, and that way a young talent like Duchene gets to stay and develop.

1. Semyon Varlamov

Yes, the goalie has faced a large amount of shots. The thing is there is only so much you can blame the defense for. Simply put, Semyon Varlamov is wildly inconsistent in net this season. His positioning has been off and he flounders when faced with heavy pressure. It is telling that Avs head coach Patrick Roy wants to keep Reto Berra in net even though Varlamov has healed from his groin injury. Varlamov's save percentage of .890 pales to Berra's .934. Colorado has been rumored to want a trade involving Varlamov, and it would be a smart move.
