Jake Guentzel Breaks Rookie NHL Playoff Scoring Record as Penguins Take 2-0 Series Lead

By Anthony Blake

Jake Guentzel is a name not even many Pittsburgh Penguins fans knew coming into the season, but this 22-year-old has gotten red-hot at the perfect time for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

His pair of goals in Game 2 made it three straight in the Stanley Cup Finals for Pittsburgh, including both game-winners.

This go-ahead goal 10 seconds into the third period put the Penguins up for good, as he beat Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne on the stick side.

With a 2-0 series lead, Guentzel’s only competition for the Conn Smythe Trophy at this point – should the Pens retain the Cup – is Evgeni Malkin, who has a playoff-high 26 points.

But Guentzel’s 12 goals in the postseason are absurd, along with his 19 points, which breaks a longstanding NHL rookie record.

The rich get richer with Pittsburgh finding this kid out of nowhere.
