Wesley Blake Simon Gotch

With NXT Takeover: R Evolution scheduled for this week, the final episode before the special event served to whet the appetite of the NXT audience. Although the in-ring action was subpar, nearly every match for R Evolution was promoted. Here are the superstars and divas on the rise and on the decline heading into the special event.

Finn Balor - Up

Although he was with Hideo Itami in a tune-up for their tag team match against The Ascension next week, Balor again stood out as the stronger member of the duo. He continues to impress in the ring, and his brutal double-stomp off the top rope put the NXT crowd in a frenzy. NXT R Evolution could be Balor's coming out party, especially if he wears the body paint for which he was renowned in international competition.

Murphy and Blake tasted defeat at the hands of the No. 1 tag team contenders The Vaudevillains, but they put up quite a fight. Despite several losses in recent weeks, the duo has improved considerably in the ring. They still need to hone their personas, but the in-ring skills are there to make this team a title contender sooner rather than later.

Although Breeze is one of the top talents in NXT, he took a beating from Balor and Itami and suffered the loss in tag action last week. Even worse, it doesn't look like he'll have a match at the upcoming special event. With the arrival of several top stars to NXT recently, the creative team will need to find new ways to utilize Breeze's terrific character.

Sasha Banks - Up

Although Charlotte scored a pinfall victory last week in a tune-up match, it was Banks that stole the spotlight in the segment. The Boss talked smack to Charlotte, and with the help of her friend Becky Lynch, left the NXT Women's Champion lying in the ring. It's more apparent every week that Banks is the baddest diva in NXT, and deserving of the gold.

For months, Zayn has been the most popular superstar in NXT, as well as the top in-ring performer. Recently, though, Zayn has shown a newfound passion in his promos. His emotional confrontation with NXT Champion Adrian Neville last week set the stage for the most anticipated NXT match of the year. Zayn is now the complete package, and his journey will likely soon culminate with the championship.
