While the Cincinnati Bengals indicated months ago they have no intention of bringing back Terrell Owens for the 2011 season, it appears there’s a new possible landing spot for the controversial wideout that would keep him in the AFC North–the Cleveland Browns.

Steve Doerschuk of CantonRep.com discussed on Friday how the Browns may target Owens once the lockout ends and free agency begins. As Doerschuk indicates, the fact that General Manager Tom Heckert was with the Philadelphia Eagles when Owens was part of the team that reached the Super Bowl and team president Mike Holmgren’s ability to work with older receivers could make Owens a likely target once free agency begins.

From Doerschuk’s article:

General Manager Tom Heckert has sent mixed signals about how aggressively he will chase free agents, but it is just now becoming clear who those free agents will be and what kind of money they will command.

One alluring Browns target could be 37-year-old wide receiver Terrell Owens. Heckert was with the Eagles when Owens helped lead them to a Super Bowl. Holmgren has always had a soft spot for older receivers. He was Jerry Rice’s last head coach, when Rice turned 42.

Owens proved last season with the Bengals he’s still capable of being an effective wideout after finishing with 72 receptions for 983 yards and nine touchdowns. Despite the recent news of his ACL surgery, Owens’ agent Drew Rosenhaus claims his client will be ready to go before the start of the 2011 season and there’s nothing to worry about.

He may have a good season or two left in him, but the main issue with Owens has always been money (last season he was forced to settle for a one-year deal worth $2 million with the Bengals). The market may be small for Owens considering his asking price, but there’s no question Owens could provide the Browns with a huge threat in the passing game–assuming his ACL is good to go.
