Arsenal: 5 Players that the Club Should Sign

Imagine a world where transfers were done in June. Players would come into the squad with a full preseason to get acclimated to the new players and possibly a new language. Pictures would surface of the new players getting on with old ones and everything is just perfect. To Arsenal fans, this seems like a fantasy world as the club now has only five days before the new season and there has yet to be a big signing come in.

There has been talk all summer of certain big players making a move to the Emirates, but nothing has materialized. Whether it was stubborn will or bad negotiating, Arsenal lost out on Gonzalo Higuain. Turning their focus to another striker, the club has entered into a contentious transfer saga that doesn’t look like will end before the season begins

Arsenal has found itself in the position of having an extremely light squad in terms of depth and they must remedy that problem if they want any chance of lifting silverware this season. There are multiple positions that I believe the team must strengthen, but more specifically, five players. Some are more important than others, but all of them would make fine additions to the squad. For the forward position, I have included two players because both are in tough spots with their current squads. Either one would be difficult to land at this point, but it is still important for Arsenal to get one of them.

The following are the five players that I believe Arsenal should sign. If they can get even three of these players, it would go miles towards their goal of ending the trophy drought that has plagued the team and its fans for eight years now.

5. Luiz Gustavo

The midfielder from Bayern Munich has been heavily linked with Arsenal in recent days with some reports claiming that a deal is near. This player would fit in nicely in the defensive midfielder role and would add some grit to the middle of the field.

4. Júlio César

Links with the Brazilian goalkeeper have dwindled in recent weeks, but I still believe that he would add some experience in between the posts. This is a player who could immediately start while mentoring the young Polish keeper, Wojciech Szczesny.

3. Ashley Williams

A defender that has proven himself in the Premier League, the Swansea City player would add depth to the thin back line. Williams is a big guy who could bring some more size and intimidation to the team. He has been linked with a move for most of the summer, but there haven’t been many solid reports yet.

2. Luis Suarez

Probably the most talked-about transfer story of the window so far, the Suarez saga continues to rage on. Suarez would add a finishing touch to the Arsenal attack, something that the team has been lacking in recent years. I have been against the move for most of the window, but now it seems like he is the best option.

1. Wayne Rooney

In my opinion, this seems like the least likely player to go to the Emirates. He seems keen on a move to Chelsea and it appears that they want him too. If the Suarez deal doesn’t come to fruition, then Arsenal should set their sights on the English international. He brings a hard-nosed approach to his goal-scoring ability. Again, this most likely won’t happen, but he would definitely add to the squad.
