Long-time Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has seen his role completely diminished at Santiago Bernabeu where he went from being a symbol to a substitute in the space of only two years and what’s worse, with no apparent reason in regards to his performance for the team.

The already known issues with José Mourinho sent him to the bench last year, and when everybody thought he would recover this starting spot after the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti, the former PSG manager surprisingly leaned towards Diego López meaning that Casillas will spend this whole season on the bench if the former Villarreal keeper is able to stay healthy.

Considering the lack of first-team action and the proximity of the World Cup next year, Iker Casillas should consider a move away from Real Madrid as soon as the transfer market opens in January.

Despite his limited minutes in recent years he’s still the No. 1 choice for Vicente Del Bosque in the Spain NT. If he doesn’t want to lose that role he needs to be with a team where he will play consistently to regain his form. Spain will defend their crown in Brazil, and it would be a disadvantage to start a player that’s not fit enough, especially in a vital position like the one between the posts.

Real Madrid chairman Florentino Pérez already said last month that he would allow Casillas to move if he wants to, and the goalkeeper said recently that if the situation doesn’t change in the next three months he’ll start considering requesting a move. He should decide faster and request it now so he can start playing again in January.

Spain needs him, and he needs to be there for Spain. The world of soccer needs him as he’s one of the best goalkeepers in our generation, and it’s simply ridiculous he’s currently not playing regularly.
