Diego Costa Can’t Play For Spain

It is no secret that Diego Costa has been absolutely unstoppable for Chelsea. The Brazilian born Spanish international has scored nine goals in seven appearances. However, Costa has been horrid for his adopted country — the Chelsea striker has featured for the Roja five time without scoring or making any sort of impact.

Costa was involved in Spain’s EURO Qualifiers against Slovakia, but again failed to make any kind of mark on the match when his country needed him the most.

The former Atletico Madrid striker is just not able to adapt to the tiki-taka style that Vicente Del Bosque demands of his squad. Costa has only truly flourished for one entire season with Atletico Madrid and seven games for Chelsea. Both Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone play a similar style that emphasize counter attacking and a direct style upfront complemented by disciplined defense at the back. The tiki-taka is almost the direct opposite to the style employed by Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, which focusses on possession and patience in attack.

Costa is a great forward in the right system, but his playing history indicates that he is unable to flourish in all schemes.

It was the youngster Paco Alcacer in his second appearance who drew Spain level. Before, the Spanish were defeated in disastrous fashion by footballing minnows Slovakia 2-1 away from home. The Roja set up Costa on numerous occasions, but the forward disappointed time and time again. If the Spanish want to fix their impotence in front of the goal they need to employ a striker outside of Costa or go back to using a false nine.
