It seemed like it was only going to be a matter of time, but now it’s official – the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released Josh Freeman. After weeks of back-and-forth between the quarterback and Greg Schiano, plus many failed attempts to trade him, the Bucs really didn’t have any other choice. They’ve decided to just completely wash their hands of this guy and move on. Frankly, you can’t blame them.
The release of Freeman won’t come without its cost, as he’s still owed about $6 million for the remainder of the season. But the team was going to have to pay him one way or another after it became clear no one was willing to trade for him. Giving him his outright release is certainly not ideal, but it’s the best move for the team. Freeman had become the proverbial ‘team cancer.’ Having him on the roster was detrimental to the team. He was a distraction and ultimately had no more value to the Bucs.

Now, it’s full steam ahead with Mike Glennon. The rookie was already promoted in favor of Freeman and this roster move leaves no doubt who the man in Tampa is moving forward. Still, the harsh reality is that this team is winless on the season. That fact is leading many to believe that Greg Schiano‘s days as head coach are numbered. If things don’t start turning around in a big hurry, he could be joining he buddy Josh Freeman on the open market.
