Rob Christy-US PRESSWIRE

In a talent rich state that every year turns out some of the best high school football talent in the country, the Central Texas region– known by it’s residents as CenTex– has some of the state’s best teams every fall.

Regardless of division these teams get deep into playoff action and the run toward state championships, and a few are starting to garner some national attention because of it.

Over the past five years, when you think Texas high school football, you think the Lake Travis Cavaliers.

Lake Travis has dominated the competition as the posh area has grown and the school has moved up through divisions from 3A to 5A, winning five straight state championships in the process. Their high-flying offense has also turned out several Division I quarterbacks, including SMU Mustangs starter Garrett Gilbert and Texas Tech Red Raiders freshman backup signal-caller Michael Brewer.

Current Cavaliers QB Baker Mayfield has several Division I offers from the Rice Owls, Florida Atlantic Owls, and Mike Leach’s Washington State Cougars, and promises to be a handful for opposing defenses this fall.

Lake Travis is one of the best– if not the best program in the state– and one of the nation’s top 10. After them, the talent pool shallows some, but not by much as you go through the other top 10 teams in CenTex.

Here is the Rant Sports Central Texas High School Football Pre-Season Top 10:

1. LAKE TRAVIS CAVALIERS (5A)

2. CEDAR PARK TIMBERWOLVES (4A)

3. LEANDER LIONS (4A)

4. WIMBERLY TEXANS (3A)

5. CIBOLO STEELE KNIGHTS (5A)

6. KERRVILLE TIVY FIGHTING ANTLERS (4A)

7. BRENHAM CUBS (3A)

8. SAN ANTONIO MADISON MAVERICKS (5A)

9. LIBERTY HILL PANTHERS (3A)

10. AUSTIN LBJ JAGUARS (4A)

There are plenty of other teams in the area including perennial power Austin Westlake– home of New Orleans Saints starter Drew Brees– that could also make some noise this fall.

It’ll be another exciting season of high school football in Central Texas, and Rant Sports will be along throughout to bring you the action!
