America loves NFL football. The league is poised to kick off the 2010 on September 9th, and it appears that more folks will be tuning in than ever before. Last season, the NFL television audience grew by 9% and some experts consider that audience might grow by as much as 15% this season.

Fans clamor for anything NFL related, so this season the NFL decided to hold it’s annual draft over a three day period with the 1st round being held in prime time. A decade ago, ESPN covered the draft over the course of the third weekend in April, and few people tuned in. This year over 23 million people watched as college players were selected by NFL teams.

The league also switched up the Pro-Bowl last season, playing it in the same city as the Super Bowl a week before the Super Bowl, viewers responded in droves, increasing viewership 40%.

All of this is great news for the fans of the greatest game on earth, but I hope that the owners and members of the NFLPA are paying attention. Labor issues are looming on the horizon with the threat of an owners lockout becoming more and more of a possible reality. With the game more popular than ever, I think it would be unwise for the owners and players to have a work stoppage which would interrupt any portion of a regular season.
