One of the greatest track and field stars the world has ever seen has confirmed when he plans to enter retirement. The good news is fans still have time to watch Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt compete.

“That was the initial plan (to sign off after Rio),” Bolt said, according to CBS Sports. “But my sponsor has asked me to go on for another year; to 2017 and London. But I’ll be doing one event, the 100. I’ve already discussed it with my coach. I can concentrate on that, and on retiring on a winning note.”

London is where Bolt claimed three gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics, the last time he achieved the premier award. For that reason, it makes plenty of sense for why he would like to wrap his career in the famous city. Any time a professional athlete has the opportunity to start and end their career in the same place is always worth taking advantage of.

The 100-meter, the single event Bolt states he will compete in, will take place at the World Championships in London in 2017. He has previously won 10 medals at the World Championships, including eight gold medals, that dates back to 2007.

An even bigger triumph is the six gold medals he has won in the Summer Olympics. In Beijing in 2008, he emerged victorious in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4×100 relay race. Four years later, he completed the same feat at the 2012 London games. Therefore, if Bolt can achieve gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4×100 relay race at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he will be the first athlete to accomplish three gold medals in those specific events in three consecutive Summer Olympics.

“That would be great,” Bolt said. “That would be awesome. That’s what I work for. Over the years I have said I want to become a legend. I want to be remembered as one of the greatest sportsmen ever.”

Bolt is already considered one of the best sportsmen ever. Look no further than his world record of 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters as evidence of that. And, there is no question his legendary status will be solidified if he is victorious in his three events in Rio.
