Memphis Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace Took The Idea To Sign Guard Gilbert Arenas From A Fan’s Blog

Well now I’ve heard everything. Apparently, Memphis Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace, took the idea to sign guard Gilbert Arenas from a fan’s blog. The blog that he happened to read was Three Shades of Blue.

Here is Wallace’s astonishing confession:

“I’m going to admit this, I’m going to come clean. I’ll be honest about it, okay? … I’m in the office of [President of Business Operations] Greg Campbell, he says, ‘You outta read this thing that’s on a blog today.’ And I don’t read the blogs, but this guy wrote this case for Gilbert Arenas, and I read the thing and said ‘Greg, you know something? This guy makes some sense.’

“I thought about it and said, you know, we gotta look into it a little further.

“So I called his agent up. I’m willing to admit it — I pride myself on being open-minded — and you look at the finances involved, and the group of players involved, and why not?”

So apparently, if you write a blog, it can make a difference. Who knew?

The blog’s writer, Lee Eric Smith, gave some great reasons as to why the Griz should sign Arenas.

Such as:

The Financial Reasons: Gil was released from the Orlando Magic via the Amnesty clause. He’ll still get paid his ridiculous salary, but not by his next team. Gil says: “If I’m willing to go back into the NBA, then you know that it’s just strictly basketball. And you know I’m giving you a product because I’m not on the outside looking in, in the sense that I’m just trying to come back because I need a paycheck. I still have my contract. So if I’m coming back, then that means I have something to offer basketball-wise.” Translation: Gil won’t need a big contract to sign.

The Basketball Reasons: I’ll be blunt: Gilbert Arenas is good at all the areas that our bench needs help:

  • A reliable, steady veteran as a backup PG? Check.
  • Deadly from 3? Check.
  • Reliable scoring on the second unit? He’s the proverbial Hibachi, prone to heat up at a moment’s notice
Nice job Smith. You show that even a fan can truly make a difference. Helps me keep going forward!
