2013 Fantasy Baseball: SP Cole Hamels Is Back

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

When the month of May ended, Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels had a miserable 4.86 ERA and an even worse 1-9 record. He was on the verge of having the worst fantasy baseball season of his career and many owners were about to give up on the three-time All-Star.

However, Hamels has finally started to live up to his potential over the last couple months and the lefty is coming off his best start of the entire season. The southpaw pitched nine dominating innings in a win against the Atlanta Braves on Monday night. He struck out nine batters and allowed one earned run on six hits with one walk. It was the true definition of a gem.

Actually, since the beginning of July, Hamels has been pitching like a true fantasy ace. In his last eight starts (69 innings) alone, Hamels has a sizzling 1.70 ERA and 3-2 record. He has finally calmed down for fantasy owners, and it couldn’t have come at a better time with the fantasy playoffs right around the corner.

Hamels may have lost his luster as a true fantasy number one, but he can still be a number two starter to rely on down the stretch. Don’t lose faith in him because of a couple rough months, because Hamels is primed to have some big outings in the final weeks of the season.
