2013 Fantasy Baseball Playoffs: Start SP Charlie Morton This Week

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The second round of the fantasy baseball playoffs are already upon us and there are a number of quality starters to give the nod this week.

One starter that absolutely has to be in your lineup this week is Pittsburgh Pirates SP Charlie Morton. People almost forgot about him earlier in the season, but he has since developed into a very reliable fourth or fifth starter.

Let’s look at his two starts this week:

9/2 @ Milwaukee Brewers

9/8 @ St. Louis Cardinals

Heading into the second round, Morton is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball and is coming off perhaps his best start of the season. The right-hander lasted 6.2 innings in a win on Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers, which is ironically the same team he will face in his first start this week. He allowed five hits and three walks in the outing and he did it all without issuing a single earned run.

Even better, Morton has a 3-0 record and sizzling 1.63 ERA over his last five starts alone. He has been a top-20 starter in recent weeks and deserves to be able to show his stuff in this round of the playoffs.

Morton loves to hammer opposing hitters low in the strike zone, so the hurler doesn’t give up many home runs. He is a master at inducing double-plays and it only helps him get out of jams once he has people on the bases. The veteran should shine this week with the extra start.

Morton is a must-start this week, so make sure to keep him in your lineup. He won’t throw a no-hitter by any means, but he will at least have another quality decision for fantasy owners when it matters most.
