Fantasy Football Wavier Wire: WR Julian Edelman

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest surprises from Week 1 of the fantasy football season was the performance of New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman. The wideout finished the day with 7 receptions for 79 yards and astonishingly hauled in two scores against the Buffalo Bills as well.

A majority of the fantasy world suspected TE Zach Sudfeld would have a breakout game, myself included, but Edelman ended up having the best fantasy performance in Buffalo this Sunday. Tom Brady targeted Edelman nine times and the quarterback looked his way time after time.

Edelman even outshined free agent sensation, Danny Amendola, in the first week of the season. Amendola may have had more catches (10) and yards (104), but Edelman was the one that ended up catching both of Brady’s touchdowns in Week 1.

Additionally, Amendola was on the sideline for a stretch nursing a groin injury. The trainers were stretching him out and the veteran wideout was clearly in pain. Amendola sill returned to action to catch a couple more balls, but it is not promising that the oft-injured wideout is already dealing with injuries. If Amendola miss any significant time, Edelman’s fantasy stock will go through the roof.

Edelman also had an impact in the return game. In the opening game, Edelman returned three punts for New England and managed a return of 16 yards. He didn’t post Devin Hester-like numbers, but they were enough to give him a slight boost in leagues that reward points for return yards.

Edelman won’t haul in 80 yards and two touchdowns each week, but he can still be a reliable WR4 or WR 5 to grab off the waiver wire.
