Fantasy Football Week 5: Wes Welker Proving Experts Wrong

Going into the 2013 fantasy football season, many were leery about Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker. Many thought he may not be as productive with an offense led by Peyton Manning, who happens to have a full arsenal of weapons at his disposal.

With Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Julius Thomas, Knowshon Moreno, Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball, the Broncos looked like a team that could give new meaning to the phrase “spread the ball around.” Thus far, though, Welker has been a pleasant surprise.

After the majority of mock drafts had him ranked anywhere from 40-65 overall heading into the season, Welker currently ranks 30th in standard non-PPR leagues. Through four games, he’s got himself 266 receiving yards and six touchdowns, good for tops in the league.

Welker has seemingly been Manning’s security blanket, as he was with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Any moment that Manning needs a big play or a third down conversion, it is almost guaranteed he looks for Welker. Although, those ‘crucial’ situations haven’t come too often this year. It still looks like Welker will be Manning’s sure-handed, go-to guy for the rest of the year.

He won’t give his owners huge, long 50-plus yard touchdowns on most days. The Broncos leave that up to Thomas for the most part. Welker, though, is the guy who will catch the ball if you can get it to him — and that’s what Manning likes to see.

Just four weeks into the year, Welker is looking like he could have been a steal for many of you out there — myself included. Keep riding him as a solid WR1 for the remainder of the season — as if that even needed to be said.
