Fantasy Football Dark Horse Sleeper: Ryan Tannehill

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The off-the-field drama surrounding the Miami Dolphins earlier this season has overshadowed how productive quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been recently, as he is averaging 277.3 passing yards (two 300-yard games) and 33.7 rushing yards per game over the last four games, along with seven passing touchdowns and four interceptions in that span. Fantasy football owners that have used Tannehill have surely been happy with that production, and he has posted at least 12 fantasy points (ESPN scoring) in 11 of 13 games this season.

Week 15 brings a favorable matchup against the New England Patriots, who have allowed multiple passing touchdowns in five of their last six games and Case Keenum of the Houston Texans threw for 272 yards in the one game over that stretch that they did not allow multiple touchdowns through the air (Week 13). That six-game stretch started with Tannehill’s first game of the season against the Patriots, when he went 22-for-42 for 192 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions back in Week 8.

Sunday’s game is a home game for the Dolphins, so winter weather will not be a factor and Tannehill has topped 250 passing yards or thrown multiple touchdowns in five of six home games so far this season. The one exception came in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals (208 passing yards with a rushing touchdown), who enter this week allowing the eighth-fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks (14.4 per game, ESPN scoring).

Tannehill is available in 74 percent of Yahoo! leagues right now, and he is worth consideration as a high-end QB2 or low-end QB1 in 12-team leagues for Week 15. Miami will finish the regular season against the other two teams in the AFC East, and Tannehill had productive games against both the Buffalo Bills (194 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 7) and the New York Jets (331 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, along with three carries for 22 yards in Week 13) in his first game against them this season. Bad weather is a possibility on the road in Buffalo for Week 16, which could limit his production, but otherwise Tannehill looks set for a strong finish to the season.
