Week 1 Fantasy Football Dud: TE Charles Clay

The tight end position has become increasingly deep in recent fantasy football seasons. There are suddenly plenty of sleepers after the top-five options come off the board and many owners choose to wait until after the fourth round to address the position.

One sleeper that was a popular option in the later rounds of drafts this summer was Charles Clay of the Miami Dolphins. Clay finished as a top-10 option in 2013 by hauling in 69 balls for 759 yards and six touchdowns. He quickly earned the trust of QB Ryan Tannehill and ended up being a great waiver wire find in the middle of the season.

Unfortunately, the tight end hybrid was less than stellar in Week 1 against the New England Patriots. Clay finished the game with only two catches for 27 receiving yards. He was targeted six times in the game, showing he is important in the offense; he simply couldn’t connect with Tannehill. It was an all-around miserable outing for the popular fantasy tight end.

Luckily, Clay will still be worth hanging onto in the majority of deeper formats. He won’t be this useless every week of the fantasy season and it is only a matter of time until he starts filling out the box score.
