Fantasy Football Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickup: RB Ronnie Hillman

The waiver wire for Week 8 offers a rare opportunity in fantasy football. It’s an opportunity that can be especially fruitful for those in need of a running back or two. Typically this late in the season, a solid running back is hard to find on the waiver wire, but Week 8 has four high quality running backs available in most leagues.

Tre Mason and Jerick McKinnon are very decent pickups this week. Denard Robinson and Ronnie Hillman are must-add players in all formats. I’ve already given my two cents on Robinson, so here’s a look at Hillman.

With Montee Ball still expected to miss at least a couple more games to a groin injury, Hillman is the featured back in the Denver Broncos’ backfield. The starting running back in the Broncos offense is always worth an add. There is also good reason to believe he could be the starter even when Ball returns.

Hillman has vastly outperformed Ball in his two starts and looked particularly impressive against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. You may have missed it amidst all the Peyton Manning hoopla, but Hillman ran through one of the best run defenses in the league to the tune of 74 yards and two TDs on 14 carries, adding 29 yards on four receptions.

The Broncos are in one of the league’s toughest divisions. The team can’t afford to wait for Ball to produce the way Hillman has since taking over. If the coaching staff has any sense, they’ll stick with what’s working, which means a big fantasy boost for those lucky enough to get Hillman.

Even if you have too many good running backs on your team right now, he’s worth owning as trade bait or to make your other backs available for trade. He and Robinson are both must-adds. Just in case someone else snags them, Mason and McKinnon are also worth claims as a backup plan.
