It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to deduce that young flamethrower Daniel Bard has been by far the most effective Red Sox reliever here in 2010. But while Jonathan Papelbon is having easily his worst season as Boston’s closer, his job in that role remains secure. Bard won’t be the Sox’ closer any time soon… When asked about Papelbon’s repeated struggles this season, Terry Francona had the following response: “He’s not there right now, but that doesn’t mean he can’t really be good. I also don’t think it means you immediately take that guy out of that role.” Papelbon is due to make anywhere from $10 to $15 million next year in what could be his final year in Boston.
