Erik Bedard Solid in Loss to Baltimore Orioles

By Troy Pfaff

Opening Day starter Erik Bedard took the mound for the fourth time this spring in Monday’s 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The lefty allowed one earned run on seven hits in six-plus innings pitched, striking out five batters. He walked one batter and tossed a total of 79 pitches.

Bedard pitched four innings of no-hit ball and shutout the Orioles on four hits through six innings.

He allowed his only earned run of the game in the seventh inning by allowing a double and two singles. He left the inning without recording an out. Jason Grill relieved Bedard and struck out two of the four batters he faced.

The offense was disappointing for the team fielding what will likely be its Opening Day lineup. Neil Walker was the only starter to record a hit, doubling to center field. Backup catcher Michael McKenry had the team’s other hit.

Pedro Alvarez went 0-for-3 on the day and struck out twice, despite team General Manager Neal Huntington stating clearly on Sunday that Pedro would begin the year with the major league club and vehemently denying any possibility of Alvarez being sent to AAA to start the year.

The Pirates take on the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. Chris Resop is scheduled to start the game against Cliff Lee. Joel Hanrahan and Chris Leroux are the notable Bucs scheduled to relieve.
