Washington Nationals’ Matt Williams Takes Home NL Manager of the Year In First Season

Matt Williams Spring Training

Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Nationals won an NL-high 96 games in 2014. It was the first year of a new era of sorts in D.C. Matt Williams took over in Washington, and based on his team’s record, you would never guess it was his first season as an MLB skipper.

Williams took home 2014 NL Manager of the Year on Tuesday, making him the first rookie manager to win the award since Joe Girardi did it in 2006. The Nationals’ skipper beat out Bruce Bochy and Clint Hurdle, who both have taken home the award before.

Moving forward, it’s all about getting Washington over the hump in the NL Playoffs. The team has made an appearance in two of the last three postseasons, but has failed to advance past the divisional round. Williams has a solid roster in place, so you can bet that expectations will be very high from this point on.
