5 Players Colorado Rockies Need To Trade For By Start of 2015 Season

The Colorado Rockies ranked as one of the most potent offensive teams in all of baseball last season, but they don't figure to contend in the increasingly competitive NL West in 2015. The Rockies, so often plagued by injury, lack the pitching depth needed to viably contend over 162 games. As trade rumors involving All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki become more prominent, it's time for Colorado to seriously consider a total rebuild.

The New York Mets are flush with young pitching talent and could potentially be swayed to part with at least one of their heralded arms if presented with a deal that would increase their playoff chances this season. The Mets may be on the cusp of at least contending for a Wild Card berth, but they still need additional offensive support. A multi-prospect trade involving Justin Morneau could ultimately be equally beneficial for both clubs.

The Boston Red Sox have entirely revamped their offense this offseason, and although they'd like to hold on to prized prospects like Mookie Betts and Brock Holt, both up-and-comers could become the subject of trade speculation. Boston aims to win its fourth World Series title in 12 seasons this year, whereas Colorado is at a crossroads. Betts slashed a solid .291/.368/.444 batting line in 213 plate appearances over 52 games in 2014.

The Texas Rangers are hoping to quickly rebound after a tumultuous 2014 campaign that saw the downfall of manager Ron Washington in addition to several roster-crippling injuries. Texas could be another suitor for Morneau, who would be an upgrade over Mitch Moreland. Joey Gallo, a power-hitting corner infielder with enormous potential, would ideally be the centerpiece of a trade that would re-instill promise in the Mile High City.

The Seattle Mariners aren't keen on the idea of trading Taijuan Walker, especially before Opening Day, but they could become pressured to make a deal if the M's contend this season. The Rockies figure to have some potential difference-makers available mid-summer, such as the aforementioned Morneau and Charlie Blackmon. If the Mariners find themselves in need of an outfielder and/or first baseman, Walker would be the subject of talks.

The revitalized Chicago Cubs have a surplus of middle infielders and could leverage their depth to bolster an already improved 25-man roster in 2015. Addison Russell, who was acquired from the Oakland A's last July, would be an ideal fit for the Rockies if Tulowitzki is dealt in a massive blockbuster. Russell is considered one of the best shortstop prospects in MLB, ranking as the seventh-best minor leaguer by Baseball Prospectus before 2014.
