UFC 166: What’s Next For Cain Velasquez?

Cain Velasquez UFC

Gary A. Vasquez USA TODAY Sports

Cain Velasquez put a beating on Junior Dos Santos last Saturday in Houston, Texas. Time after time, Cain pressured JDS against the cage, landing shots that virtually went unanswered. It was a beatdown that proved Cain was the better fighter, and he seems to be getting better with every fight.

JDS showed tremendous heart, but it wasn’t enough to claim victory. Now that Cain has dominated JDS not once, but twice, it begs the question: who’s next for Velasquez? Dana White answered this question at the UFC 166 post-fight press conference. Apparently, he believes Fabricio Werdum is the next man in line for the title shot.

Werdum is going to present some interesting stylistic matchups for Cain, namely his world-class jiu-jitsu game. Werdum is arguably the best jiu-jitsu practitioner in the heavyweight division, and he will surely look to test Cain’s BJJ in hopes of getting the win. Werdum is coming off an impressive performance over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira that showcased his exceptional submission skills. He was able to lock up an armbar and Nogueira was forced to tap verbally.

If there is any many to test Cain on the ground, it’s Werdum. But, can Werdum even get the fight to the mat? Cain is one of the best wrestlers in the heavyweight division, and he is prone to taking smart tactics to come out the victor. Going up against Werdum, he would surely try to keep the fight standing, whether it’s boxing him or pressing him against the cage like he did against JDS.

Regardless of the outcome, it should be yet another exciting heavyweight matchup which should take place early next year.
