NASCAR Needs To Add a Throwback Weekend Honoring History

In the modern era of NASCAR with the ever-changing sponsors, NASCAR should dedicate one weekend to paying tribute to the past and bring back iconic car paint schemes from its history. Longtime fans would appreciate and enjoy watching an old favorite car fight its way through the field and maybe even to victory lane.

NASCAR has experimented with the idea on a small scale multiple times with success. Recently, the Camping World Truck series had driver Darrell Wallace Jr. honor 2015 Hall of Fame inductee Wendell Scott by driving a truck with his number and paint scheme. Kurt Busch drove a Cole Trickle City Chevrolet scheme from the famous movie ‘Days Of Thunder‘ in a Nationwide series race in 2013. Both were fun and enjoyable to watch with the anticipation of seeing these cars out front and in victory lane.

This also is an opportunity for NASCAR to rekindle relations with old sponsors no longer involved with the sport. Contacting a company for a one-race agreement may lead to future sponsorships if it proves to be successful. NASCAR is always looking to diversify sponsorships, and maybe looking to the past help the sport do just that.

Other major sports leagues have throwback games and weeks that have proven to be both enjoyable and successful for the fans and organizations involved. A rotation of track participation, honoring Hall of Fame Inductees, remembering past drivers and paying tribute to the history of the sport are just some ideas that could come about with this scheduled event.
