The Atlanta Hawks are a team looking for a new direction after a recent front office scandal involving racist remarks made by a couple members of the organization.

The NBA takes these situations very seriously, especially given what happened with the Los Angeles Clippers and the racist statements made by former owner Donald Sterling that led to him being banned from the league last spring. The Hawks are doing their best to be proactive on this case and want to rectify it by any means necessary.

Rumors have begun to circulate on whether or not there will be a new ownership in Atlanta soon, and one name that has come up is former NBA All-Star Chris Webber. This does not come as a surprise given Webber’s interest in staying connected to the league since retiring. He has recently served as an analyst for TNT and NBA TV over the last few years. Personally, I think Webber is an excellent studio analyst and a skilled play-by-play commentator. I always enjoy listening to his insight and I feel that he has a very practical way of viewing the game.

Weber definitely has a deep love for the sport of basketball, and it would not come as a shock if he has already discussed becoming an owner of an NBA team with fellow analyst and expert entrepreneur/businessman Magic Johnson. Webber is widely loved and admired around the league, and should he decide to pursue the opportunity to be an owner of an NBA team like the Hawks, I think it would be an ideal fit for him, the league, and the Hawks too.

Of course, a lot of things will have to come together perfectly between Webber, his prospective ownership group and the NBA in order for this to become a reality, but I think given his strong initiative that this could definitely happen.

The NBA wants to look out for their former players the best way they can given the numerous stories that have come out recently about former players who are buried in debt after their playing days in the league. The NBA wants to show that they care about them, and being that Webber retired recently in 2008, for him to climb the ladder so quickly and become an owner of one of their franchises would be an excellent story for the league.

The way I see it, this is a win-win-win situation should all the pieces come together. Webber would be a terrific owner given his vast knowledge on the game and business of basketball. The NBA would welcome him with open arms, and this would also gives the Hawks organization that much needed “fresh start” they desire.
