Quincy Miller, previously of the Denver Nuggets, worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday afternoon and will likely sign a deal with the team by the end of the week. The move is a good one for both sides and will add wing depth to a roster coping with injuries and ineptitude — Wesley Johnson, here’s lookin’ at you, kid.

Miller, in his third year, was released by the Nuggets right before the season as Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari hope to make full recoveries from the injuries that have kept them out of most of the last two seasons. As Xavier Henry and Nick Young have struggled to stay healthy and Johnson has struggled to do really anything productive on a basketball court, Miller could instantly become the Lakers’ best option at small forward.

Miller coming to L.A. also affects players beyond his position. Ronnie Price and Jeremy Clarkson have battled for minutes behind Jeremy Lin, though Byron Scott prefers Price’s experience. That being said, as the losses pile up, GM Mitch Kupchak could decide getting minutes for younger players should be a higher priority. Price might wind up as the odd man out should they add Miller.

Another interesting element is the timing, considering the Lakers just last night were granted a disabled player exception for Julius Randle and are also awaiting a similar exception on Steve Nash. Los Angeles was given a $1.5 million exception to bring in another player that would probably be used in their acquisition of Miller. If this is the case, they might not need to cut another player as well, meaning Scott will still have Price to play over Clarkson. Yippee.

All signs are pointing toward Miller joining the Lakers sooner rather than later, nonetheless. Fans should welcome this move for the simple reason of less Wesley Johnson (even the new-and-improved, more aggressive version he promised them) is more.
