5 Free Agents the Denver Nuggets Should Target In 2015 Offseason

The Denver Nuggets have quite the task ahead of them if they want to go back to being one of the top eight teams in the West. Many current players on the roster are either on expiring contracts or are being subjected to the countless trade rumors floating around the web. Free agency could be the key in getting this franchise back to conference title contention. Here are five free agents the Nuggets should target in the 2015 offseason.

5. Wesley Matthews

The shooting guard position is one of the Nuggets' weakest spots on their roster. Wesley Matthews has unequivocally become one of the top 20 guards in the league and would provide a huge boost both offensively and defensively for the Nuggets' backcourt. Matthews can stretch the floor (shooting over 45 percent from the field, 38 percent from three) while also providing solid one-on-one defense (averaged over 1.5 steals per game this season).

4. Brandan Wright

Outside of Jusuf Nurkic, the Nuggets don’t have another capable center to rely on in the rotation. Brandan Wright would be an excellent fit in terms of defensive capabilities in protecting the rim. Wright averaged 1.5 blocks and 5.0 rebounds per game this past season, all while playing a measly 20 minutes. Pairing Wright with Kenneth Faried in the frontcourt would be a nightmare for any opposing guard trying to drive the lane.

3. Rodney Stuckey

With the uncertainty of Ty Lawson’s future in Denver, the Nuggets could be looking for another young, explosive point guard. Rodney Stuckey had a career season with the Indiana Pacers this year, averaging 12.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.0 steal on over 40 percent shooting from both the field and beyond the arc. Stuckey would be an ideal match for the Nuggets' run-and-gun offensive system.

2. Gerald Green

In terms of a floor spacing reserve shooting guard, Gerald Green is arguably the best option going into free agency. The Nuggets desperately needed more three-point shooting options this past season, as their top shooter was Alonzo Gee averaging just 40 percent from beyond the arc. Green averaged over 40 percent from both the field and three-point range this past season, and he would be a tremendous fit alongside Ty Lawson in the backcourt.

1. Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler is by far the best shooting guard heading into free agency, and the Nuggets would be crazy to not give the reigning Most Improved Player a look. Butler can not only control a team's offense, but he has also emerged as one of the top defensive players in the league, averaging over 1.8 steals and 5.8 rebounds per game. With both Ty Lawson and Jimmy Butler on the roster, the Nuggets would have one of the league's best backcourts.
