Caviar dreams and champagne wishes are what the media is selling you with any thoughts of Kevin Durant signing with the Miami Heat in the summer of 2016.
You can start with the simple fact that just as recently as last month, Durant sold his 3,800-square-foot Biscayne Boulevard condo for $3.15 million. Then there is the fact that like LeBron James, everyone claims that that he only has two choices: go home to D.C. or stay in Oklahoma City.
As well as onlookers’ predictions and the plight of his living arrangements, KD to South Beach has a significant roadblock that everyone seems to be ignoring. Without some major miracle of the salary cap variety, the Heat cannot afford him. Not even with a slight pay cut. One that likely would not be coming if you follow the history of negotiating by his Roc Nation Sports agency.
However, let us pretend that Durant is up for leaving a little money on the table. Miami would be cash strapped after paying max — and near max — dollars to Chris Bosh, Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside. Attach that to the alleged $20 million price tag that Dwyane Wade is asking for over the next three years and you have no chance of seeing the Oklahoma City Thunder star in a black and red uniform without multiple transactions to breakup the core.
Imagination and speculation are great, but the thought of Pat Riley bringing Durant on is best left for your Fan Duel fantasy team.
