The Los Angeles Lakers have had a busy offseason. They also have a lot of young prospects on the roster that give the organization a little bit of hope for the future. One position that has a decent amount of depth is power forward, where they have several players who should be competing for significant time at the spot. As a result, they may need to clear some space, and one player who may be on his way out is Ryan Kelly.

Kelly was able to receive a two-year contract last offseason, although the deal seemed a little high at the time considering he had an uneven rookie season. He displayed some promise on the offensive side with his basketball IQ, passing ability and willingness to learn. However, he was labeled as a shooter who could stretch the floor, but his percentages show otherwise. He barely shot over 33 percent from deep in his first two seasons, and his regular field goal percentage was not very impressive either. He saw plenty of time at small forward, but was unable to stay in front of anyone, and wasn’t consistent enough on offense to keep opposing defenses honest.

The Lakers have a lot of hope for Julius Randle, who has a lot of potential, but his lack of size means that he will likely only be able to player power forward, and maybe some spot minutes at small forward if he can improve his shot. Brandon Bass was a good signing, and Tarik Black has proven that he can earn a spot on the roster, but both are still undersized power forwards who will struggle with other positions. Lastly, the team drafted Larry Nance Jr., a power forward prospect who may be able to move to small forward later on if he can develop an outside shot.

With so many power forwards, the team should look to move on from Kelly and try to get something in return for his expiring contract which will net him almost two million dollars next season. He has potential to develop into an adequate stretch four, but the Lakers already have too many players on the roster who can really only play power forward. Kelly is not strong enough to play center, and even though he gets minutes at the three, he struggles greatly and should not be placed in that position. Kelly has been a professional since being with the organization, but it may be better for both sides to try and trade him into a better situation.
