Grading The Phoenix Suns’ 2015 NBA Free Agency

The Phoenix Suns had one of the more uneventful free agencies so far, unanimously linked with multiple players that were deemed All-Star worthy, yet unable to sign any of the marquee free agents. The Phoenix Suns have one of the youngest teams in the NBA, yet looked poised to make a leap into the Western Conference playoff picture.

What really hurt the Suns this summer was the amount of quality role players this team saw walk out through free agency. Marcus Thorton (Rockets), Gerald Green (Heat) and Brandan Wright (Grizzlies) all took their talents to other teams, and yet the Suns in return only managed to sign Ronnie Price (Lakers) and Mirza Teletovic (Nets) to bolster this already weak second unit. Marcus Morris was also traded off to the Pistons in order for the Suns to acquire their biggest prize this offseason.

The Suns’ biggest acquisition this summer was signing 14-year veteran center Tyson Chandler. This move gives the Suns a mentor for rookie center Alex Len, and also allows the Suns to have a true rim defender. Outside of signing Chandler though, Suns management really swung for the fences this summer but whiffed horribly. The only meeting the Suns got this summer with a top-tier free agent was with LaMarcus Aldridge, who eventually spurned potentially playing in Phoenix for the Lone-Star State in San Antonio.

Overall, the Suns’ free agency period was wildly unsuccessful. Other then the Chandler signing, the Suns lost a lot of key free agents that could have continued to really bolster the second unit. Playing in the Western Conference might have just gotten a lot more difficult for this franchise.

Grade: C-
