Second-Year Players Who Will Break Out In 2015-16

Second-Year Players Who Will Break Out In 2015-16 Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports
Not all rookies take the league by storm in their first season. Heck, there is usually only a handful of rookies (if that) who make a relatively big impact in Year 1. And then Year 2 comes around, these second-year players start to really pick up the NBA game and BANG — they start making a mark in the pros.

Look for these 10 rookies to do just that in the 2015-16 season.

10. Adreian Payne, Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a ton going for them right now. It more than likely won't show in the record department when the 2015-16 NBA season comes and goes, but it will eventually. Although Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns will get most of the love, don't sleep on Adreian Payne.

9. Kyle Anderson, San Antonio Spurs

Kyle Anderson was the MVP of the summer. Although that doesn't guarantee an ounce of success during the real season, it is still a gigantic step in the right direction. The king of summer (league) is going to make his mark in Year 2 — you can count on that.

8. Mitch McGary, Oklahoma City Thunder

Mitch McGary, whether he becomes a star or not, will always be a spark. A year older and a year wiser could lead to McGary receiving more playing time in 2015-16, which would benefit McGary, the Oklahoma City Thunder and everyone else involved.

7. Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics

Although rookies like Marcus Smart were supposed to explode onto the NBA scene last year, that didn't necessarily happen. Smart showed signs of being a great player, but he couldn't put it all together. But hey, the transition from college ball to the pros is a vicious one.

6. Doug McDermott, Chicago Bulls

I predicted Doug McDermott to be the Rookie of the Year before the 2014-15 season started — and boy do I wish I could take that one back. His sophomore season will be a much more successful outing.

5. Zach LaVine, Minnesota Timberwolves

If you are looking for a team that is loaded with young talent and could take off in the very near future, look no further than the team out in Minnesota.

While Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins continue to get the most buzz, Zach LaVine, the dunking champion, will just be doing his thing — which is being a great talent and dunking at an elite level.

4. Jordan Clarkson, Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe Bryant is back and the Los Angeles Lakers went with D'Angelo Russell in the 2015 NBA Draft. Translation: Who knows what Jordan Clarkson's exact role will be in 2015-16.

Believe it or not, Clarkson was a top rookie last season, and the Lakers are not just going to abandon his talents by hiding him on the bench.

3. Julius Randle, Los Angeles Lakers

Julius Randle’s rookie season was cut massively short (he went down in the very first game last year). Injury aside, it wasn’t long ago when Randle was dominating in college hoops and also being considered one of the most pro-ready players. The Lakers might be down, but they won’t stay that way for long thanks to young talents like Randle.

2. Elfrid Payton, Orlando Magic

Elfrid Payton is going to be racking up a ton of triple-doubles in his career, and don't be surprised when he fires off a few of those bad boys in 2015-16.

1. Jabari Parker, Milwaukee Bucks

Jabari Parker was off to a great start in his rookie campaign, and then an injury struck him down. Although it would be in the Milwaukee Bucks' best interest to ease Parker into big minutes, he will eventually take off in the upcoming season. There was a reason why he was drafted No. 2 overall, folks.

After losing DeAndre Jordan in the worst way imaginable, the Dallas Mavericks looked to be a broken team. No one was expecting them to make the playoffs. Still, the Mavs are one of the older teams in the league and they will definitely try to get younger in the offseason. These are five guys who won't be around in 2016-17.

James Harden Refuses To Play Defense -- Again

James Harden has a terrible reputation when it comes to playing defense. There's no denying what he's capable of offensively, but defending just isn't his cup of tea. He proved this to be the case once again in Houston's matchup with the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, and his feeble efforts are simply inexcusable.
