Kentucky Wildcats Would Be Better Off With One Loss Before the 2015 NCAA Tournament

When you score a perfect 100 on a test, you don’t find the ceiling to your achievement. Yes you performed well, but you have no idea how well you could’ve performed either. It’s not until you hit a wall or fall short of a benchmark where you can truly evaluate yourself, and this idea is analogous to the situation of the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team.

The Wildcats nearly lost to the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday night, and that would’ve been a good thing. It would have brought the mirror front and center so Kentucky could have a good look into it. Now it’s one game against the Florida Gators, then the SEC conference tournament and then the Big Dance. There’s little room for feedback.

You can learn a lot from winning, but you learn so much more from losing. Finishing a season undefeated is an incredible accomplishment. Doing so while holding residence in a Power-5 conference is even more spectacular. But even a team as talented as Kentucky needs access to a reset button. Their ultimate goal should be to win every game, but it would be an undisguised blessing to take a shot in the mouth before heading into the field of 68.

Just a bitter taste of one loss would be reminder enough to systemically not want to endure that feeling again. Unfortunately, the Kentucky Wildcats may not swallow this pill until it truly is bitter — sometime during March Madness. It’d be nice to run the table, but it’d be much nicer to simply win it all when it matters most.
